UK POP CHART HISTORY - MARCH 1972
The new chart topper this week comes courtesy of American vocalist, Harry Edward Nelson III, aka
Nilsson. The song in many ways was an an unlikely selection to record, being an obscure LP track
from the Welsh band, Badfinger. However, the combination of Richard Perry's faultless production and
Nilsson's superb vocal performance transformed a rather messy Badfinger ballad into an all time pop
classic.
Scraping into the top 20 at number 19 this week is the first, and highly controversial offering from
Paul McCartney's new band, Wings. The BBC waste no time in banning 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish'
from its airwaves. Amazingly, this won't be the last time this year that Macca will feel the
wrath of the BBC censors.
