UK POP CHART HISTORY - AUGUST 1972
Gilbert O' Sullivan's 'Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day' manages to re-enter this week's top 20 at number 19
after slipping out of the chart last week.
The only actual new entry to this week's chart comes in at number 20, and happens to be the debut 7
inch single from Electric Light Orchestra. ELO was initially a side project for the three remaining
members of The Move. The debut album, from which '10538 Overture' was lifted, was actually released
at the end of 1971, and at this point had failed to chart. Despite this, Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and
Bev Bevan had, by now, decided to abandon The Move completely in order to concentrate their efforts on ELO.
Amazingly, this decision was taken while The Move's final single 'California Man' was enjoying top 20
success.
Now that's what I call, 'quitting while you're ahead'.
