UK POP CHART HISTORY - OCTOBER 1972

A bit of a novelty at number 1 this week. Lieutenant Pigeon's 'Mouldy Old Dough' was issued earlier this year in February, but sank without trace. However, after storming to the top of the charts in Belgium, it was decided to re-issue the single here in the UK. This time around, the Coventry-based four piece managed to strike gold when 'Mouldy Old Dough' achieved the enviable position of being the second biggest selling single of 1972.
Alice Cooper gets this week's highest new entry at number 17 with 'Elected'. Alice and his band were obviously hoping to repeat the success of their summer chart topper 'School's Out'.
