UK POP CHART HISTORY - NOVEMBER 1972
There are four new entries in this week's chart. The highest at number 6 gives Donny Osmond his third
smash hit of the year. Donny decides to stick to his winning formula and releases yet another classic
ballad from the fifties. This time it's the old Frankie Avalon hit 'Why' that gets the Donny treatment.
Just one place below Donny, at number 7, It's...
err...
Donny again!
This time though, he's accompanied by the rest of the Osmond clan. 'Crazy Horses', is the self-penned
UK debut hit for the Osmonds (as a band), who at this time were about to experience the biggest example
of fan idolatry in the UK since Beatle-mania.
At number 19, the Peter Oakman-fronted Harley Quinne enjoy their only visit to the UK top 20 with the
old Gary US Bonds standard, 'New Orleans'. Finally, at number 20, 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining' is back to haunt
Jeff Beck. Originally a hit in 1967, Jeff Beck has spent the rest of his career publicly loathing 'Hi-Ho
Silver Lining', the song he claims to have been press-ganged into recording by his then manager/producer,
Mickie Most.
